A 54-year-old man has died while working on the renovations of Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, the club and Catalan police have said.
Barcelona issued a statement confirming the death of the worker, and regional police said an investigation is taking place after an incident at the stadium on Friday.
“The club wishes to express its deepest condolences and extend its heartfelt support to his family, friends, and colleagues,” the club statement said.
“FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta wishes to personally convey his condolences to the family and places himself at their disposal on behalf of the entire club.”
Catalan police said in a statement to The Athletic that local police received a report at 3.30pm (ET) on Friday “regarding a workplace accident in the Les Corts district”.
“A 54-year-old man has reportedly died from a blow while working on the construction of the Camp Nou stadium,” the statement said. “Police units from the Les Corts precinct, the Investigation Unit, and the Emergency Medical System responded to the scene, but were unable to save his life.”
Police said that in line with “established procedures”, it had “notified the on-call investigating judge and the Department of Business and Labor”.
Renovation works on Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium have been ongoing since June 2023.
The initial date for the refurbished stadium’s completion, agreed in 2023 between the club and Turkish building firm Limak, was June 2026, but that has been pushed back a year to 2027. The installation of a roof will follow.
Supporters returned to Camp Nou in November 2025, and matches at the venue have since been subject to limited crowds while the renovations continue.
There were 56,868 fans at the final home match of the 2025-26 season against Real Betis, just over half of the stadium’s intended 105,000-capacity when all the works are finished.
