The US hospitality giant has signed an agreement with Egyptian developers Misr Italia Properties and People & Places Developments to build nine new hotels and resorts across the country, adding more than 1,800 hotel rooms and branded residences as Egypt accelerates efforts to become a leading global tourism destination.

The agreement covers projects in Egypt’s fast-growing coastal and urban destinations, including mixed-use developments combining hotels, luxury residences and commercial facilities.

The expansion comes as Egypt ramps up investment in tourism infrastructure, aiming to accommodate a growing influx of international visitors while attracting more foreign capital into its hospitality and real estate sectors.

According to Misr Italia Properties, the projects represent a total investment of more than 56.7 billion Egyptian pounds (about $1.1 billion).

Beyond expanding hotel capacity, the developments are expected to generate around 6,000 direct and indirect jobs and accommodate approximately 373,000 tourists every year once fully operational.

Marriott’s growing North Africa strategy

For Marriott, the deal reinforces its long-term commitment to North Africa, where governments are investing heavily in airports, transport links, new cities and tourism infrastructure to diversify their economies.

The company already operates thousands of properties globally and continues to expand aggressively across emerging markets where rising travel demand is creating new opportunities for international hotel brands.

Speaking during the signing ceremony in New Alamein City, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the agreement supports the country’s strategy to expand hotel capacity as international visitor numbers continue to rise.

The agreement represents another step in Egypt’s strategy to attract tourism investment and expand hotel capacity as visitor demand continues to increase.”

The ceremony was also attended by Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy, Housing Minister Randa El-Menshawy and senior executives from Marriott, Misr Italia Properties and People & Places Developments.

Egypt’s infrastructure push

The latest agreement reflects a broader shift in Egypt’s development strategy.

Over the past several years, the government has invested billions of dollars in roads, utilities, new urban centres and transport infrastructure, creating fresh opportunities for private investors in hospitality, entertainment and real estate.

Housing Minister Randa El-Menshawy said the government is focusing on tourism projects within newly developed cities, arguing that improved infrastructure is making these locations increasingly attractive for international investors.

Officials are also making additional land available for hotel and entertainment developments as the country seeks to increase accommodation capacity ahead of future tourism growth.

Tourism becomes a key economic pillar

Hospitality has become an increasingly important part of Egypt’s economic diversification strategy as authorities look to boost foreign exchange earnings beyond traditional sectors.

Mohamed Khaled El-Assal, co-CEO of Misr Italia Properties, said hospitality is now a central pillar of the company’s real estate strategy as Egypt prepares for larger volumes of international travellers.

His co-founder, Karim Khaled El-Assal, added that partnering with globally recognised hotel brands helps improve occupancy rates and service quality across both resort destinations and commercial developments.

The announcement also reflects growing investor confidence in Egypt’s tourism industry, with international hotel operators continuing to expand despite global economic uncertainty.

As competition for tourism spending intensifies across Africa and the Middle East, Marriott’s latest investment signals that Egypt remains one of the continent’s most strategically important hospitality markets.
